Offshore Wind
Offshore wind infrastructure requires scour protection around the turbine foundations, as well as cable routes. Traditional methods of providing scour protection such as rock dumping or use of plastic fronds provide no opportunity for nature. Our Eco-Reef products protect windfarm infrastructure from scour whilst delivering biodiversity net gain. These products can be used as stand alone scour protection as well as in combination with conventional methods, for example on top of a filter layer where small rock mattresses have been applied. In addition or Eco-Rock Armour can be used as an environmentally friendly alternative to landfall sea defences.
Bespoke Design
We use a collaborative design process, utilising our expertise and the expertise of our partners to provide assistance at all stages of scour protection design, providing the perfect solution bespoke to your project.
Concept design: We will liaise with you to understand the design specifications required for your project. We will then use 3D modelling software to create a design based on these specifications and simulate its’ tensile strength and resilience to stress.
Pre-FEED tank testing: We will test a small scale prototype, in collaboration with the university of Southampton, using their laboratory tank facilities, to assess the deigns ability to reduce scour.
FEED prototype testing: We will use pilot studies to test full scale prototypes in a representative environment.
Final specification: Based on pilot study results, modifications can be made for the final design.
Eco-Reefs

Fully scalable
Eco-Reefs are designed for ecologically enhanced scour protection of offshore wind infrastructure such as cable routes and turbine foundations. Conventional scour protection such as hard granite rocks, tyre mattresses or plastic fronds create poor environments which support limited biodiversity. In contrast, our Eco-reefs provide complex habitats that support a large diversity of species. The designs offer shelter for crustaceans, fish and sessile species, as well as a plethora of flora. Our Eco-Reefs can then become a seeding area, encouraging colonisation and growth of those species in the wider area.
Our subtidal Eco-Reefs are based on two scalable designs, a hexagonal and spherical Eco-Reef. The units are fully scalable and can be made to desired size and design specifications. Enquire now to find out more.
Hexagonal Eco-Reef
Built around a hexagonal base, the hexagonal Eco-Reef provides shelter for fish and crustaceans whilst the complex surface texture facilitates biocolonisation of sessile species and algae.
Spherical Eco-Reef
This spherical design provides crevasses and openings, which provide shelter for fish and crustaceans and facilitates biocolonisation of sessile species and algae.
Eco-Rock Armour
Provides protection from coastal erosion
Provides biodiversity net gain
Unique Greening the Grey® and GeoBlock® technologies
17% carbon reductions compared to conventional rock
Contain up to 90% waste or recycled materials
Can be made to bespoke design specifications
Fully scalable
Eco-Rock Armour is an alternative to conventical quarried rock or concrete rock armour used in coastal defences. These traditional approaches create poor environments which support limited biodiversity. In contrast our Eco-Rock Armour offers effective erosion control measures whilst providing complex habitats that become rapidly colonised with a large diversity of species. Eco-Rock Armour units are easy to install using conventional methods and can be used as stand alone products or as a capping layer in combination with traditional rock armour. Units are fully scalable and can be made to desired size and weight specifications. Enquire now to find out more.
